“It is my pleasure to welcome you to the United States of America for the US-Africa leaders’ Summit and the ministerial meeting where we shall discuss cooperation between our various regions. He added that the US and African states share a strong relationship in health.
“Together, we have tackled HIV and AIDs, Tuberculosis and Malaria, among others, including the acceleration for universal coverage.
“This summit is an opportunity to build on that partnership,” he added, noting that urgent investment in health workers in Africa should be a major focus in the coming years in order to build capacity.
“Now, today, we are announcing $250m new funding to address the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa,” he said, calling upon leaders on the continent to create strong health systems that can save the population from the devastating effects of epidemics.
A strong healthcare system, he added, builds a strong response foundation whenever pandemics strike.
